On the morning of October 11, 2024, Prof. John Pomeroy, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, visited our university for academic exchange and delivered a lecture titled "Advances in Cold Regions Hydrology." The session was chaired by Prof. Yu Zhongbo and attended by over 100 faculty members and students from the Hydrology Institute and related research teams. Prof. Pomeroy's presentation emphasized the complex relationships among cold regions hydrology, land use, and climate change. He introduced the theories, methods, and tools developed by his team in the field of cold region snow hydrology, covering various areas of research including snow distribution, redistribution, melting, and interception. During the talk, Prof. Pomeroy deeply explored the challenges faced by cold regions hydrology research and future directions, sharing insights into the CRHM (Cold Regions Hydrology Model) developed by his team, with a detailed explanation of the model's structure and workflow. He also showcased field monitoring work conducted in cold regions, providing participants with a more intuitive understanding of the research findings. Additionally, he presented related studies on glacial and permafrost changes under climate change, which provide important scientific evidence for understanding cold region hydrological processes. This content not only provided students and faculty with the latest academic information and broadened their research horizons but also stimulated thought among the participants. In the interactive Q&A session, students and faculty actively engaged in in-depth discussions and exchanges with Prof. Pomeroy regarding the report's content. After the lecture, Prof. Pomeroy met with the university leadership to enthusiastically discuss plans for future collaboration. He then visited the National Key Laboratory of Water Disaster Prevention, where he listened to reports from the Tibetan Plateau research team and the young faculty team at the Hydrology Institute, engaging in academic exchange and guidance on related research work. On October 12, Prof. Yu accompanied Prof. Pomeroy to the Xin'an River Comprehensive Hydrology Experiment Research Base, where Prof. Pomeroy expressed his strong approval of the field experiments conducted there. |
